ISRO Located The Vikram Lander and Trying to Establish a Communication Link. But Only 14 Days Left. WHY?
ISRO today has located the Vikram
lander using the thermal images sent in by the orbiter. It may have been hard
landing and we will try for the next 14 days to establish communication, ISRO
chief, Dr. K Sivan said. Vikram had to reduce its speed from appox. 20,000 km/h
to almost 7km/h from an altitude of 30 km to 100m in matter of 15 minutes by
firing retro-rockets to slow down in two braking phases - Rough braking and
Fine braking. Imagine yourself being there on the moon and seeing this.
Why Chandarayaan II is a succesful mission?
90-95% of the mission objectives are accomplished using eight-state-of-the-art instruments installed on the orbiter which performdesignated science tasks of Chandrayaan II mission. Lander and Rover will survive only 14 days before harsh night of the winter freezes them. Lander/Rover are made to survive 1 lunar day which is 14 earth days. Majority of the equipment is on the orbiter which makes the mission successful. We may officially say India is the 4th country to have landed on the moon.
Why
Chandrayaan II is a crucial step for India in space- race?
Because space colonization is the
future, every country is trying to establish a moon colony and use it as a
pit-stop to reach Mars and beyond. Lunar south-pole contains water ice trapped
in craters. Helium3 could be converted into fuel and used in spaceships while
reaching Mars. After all, you need resources for life on earth and space. And India could be space-super power
at Lunar south pole.
